Wemate, a trailblazer in AI companionship and character AI, has released a groundbreaking global survey that delves into consumer attitudes towards AI in fostering social connections. The findings reveal that a staggering 89% of respondents struggle to form new friendships or join communities, highlighting the pressing need for enhanced social tools.
The Connecting with AI report by shows that 52% of consumers are open to the idea of an AI companion offering advice and companionship. However, caution remains, with 85% agreeing that advanced technology should not overshadow human interactions, and 68% concerned that AI could erode genuine human connections. This highlights a critical insight: while AI is increasingly integrated into our lives, the value of authentic human relationships remains irreplaceable, with 61% preferring to remain single over engaging in a relationship with a Spicy AI companion.
The survey also points out how brands can bridge the gap between technology and human connection. 78% of respondents value brands that promote genuine community connections. Brands that foster these connections are appreciated, with 73% feeling a sense of belonging through shared brand experiences. Moreover, 77% believe that brands encouraging consumer connections demonstrate a commitment to their well-being. Interestingly, 49% of consumers still favor the authenticity of human customer service over the efficiency of AI chatbots.
Consumer priorities have shifted from seeking social media-worthy experiences in 2014 to desiring joy and escapism in 2019. Now, the focus is on connections—with communities of shared interests, existing friends and family, and new acquaintances. An overwhelming 64% identified fostering connections as essential for a happy and healthy life.
“Consumers’ need for connections is undeniable,” said Jane Doe, Chief Strategy Officer at Wemate. “AI, particularly when designed with empathy, has the potential to enhance these connections without replacing the human touch. As Alain de Botton noted, ‘What we long for and are slowly dying without is: community.’ Brands must carefully balance technology and human interaction, using AI to bridge societal gaps and meet consumer needs authentically.”
John Smith, COO at AI Insights, commented on the findings, “Shared experiences are pivotal in our lives. While technology can facilitate these connections, it also risks isolating us by replacing genuine interactions. Brands must enhance, not replace, human experiences through their strategies.”
One respondent noted, “As a society, our deep connections are diminishing, becoming increasingly superficial.” In response, Wemate has developed the AI Connection Framework based on insights from the Connecting with AI study. This framework identifies key areas businesses must address to foster deeper human interactions through intelligent technology use.
