Volantis Raises $88M to Enhance AI Inference

Volantis raised $88M Series A led by Lachy Groom and Abstract Ventures to enhance AI inference speed and memory capacity.

Tapa Ghosh, CEO of Volantis.

The big picture: San Francisco-based Volantis has raised $88 million in a Series A round. The funding was co-led by Physical Intelligence co-founder Lachy Groom and Abstract Ventures, with participation from venture capitalist John Doerr, VXI Capital, Triatomic, and Susa Ventures. Angel investors included podcaster Dwarkesh Patel, Unconventional AI founder Naveen Rao, and Anthropic engineer Sholto Douglas.

Why it matters:

  • Memory Bottleneck: Large AI models require substantial memory capacity and bandwidth, which current computing architectures struggle to provide efficiently, limiting performance and scalability.
  • Cost & Speed: Volantis aims to enable ultra-fast inference, targeting up to 10,000 tokens per second per user for models exceeding 20 trillion parameters, while simultaneously reducing the inference cost per token.
  • Agent Acceleration: The company’s technology is designed to initially accelerate AI agents, including advanced coding systems, with a long-term vision to scale memory systems by orders of magnitude across future hardware generations.

How it works:

  • Optical Integration: Volantis addresses AI’s memory bottleneck by using optics, enabling chips with significantly larger amounts of fast and cost-effective memory.
  • Enhanced Bandwidth: The new AI inference architecture boosts both memory bandwidth and capacity per chip by orders of magnitude, crucial for the continuous, high-speed data movement required by large models.
  • Integrated Engines: The company plans to deliver its first integrated inference engines to customers in 2027, supporting the deployment of next-generation AI models.

The catch: The AI chip market is intensely competitive, dominated by established players like Nvidia and a growing number of startups specializing in inference hardware. Volantis’s optical approach offers a novel solution, but successfully bringing a new architecture to market and achieving widespread adoption against entrenched solutions and a 2027 delivery target presents significant execution risks.
