The big picture: PicoJool has raised $27.5 million in Series A funding to expand development and commercialization of its optical connectivity technology for AI data centers, addressing the increasing pressure on network bandwidth and power consumption from rising computing density.

How it works:

  • High-speed VCSELs: PicoJool develops high-speed 100G and 200G VCSEL products, alongside lower-power microVCSEL configurations operating at 50G NRZ and 64G NRZ/PAM4.
  • Massively parallel architecture: Its microVCSEL platform uses a parallel design to boost aggregate bandwidth while reducing the energy needed to move individual bits of data.
  • Scalable interconnects: The company’s optical connectivity products are designed to scale from 800G to 1.6T and 3.2T configurations, targeting applications like optical compute interconnects and PCIe 6.0-based near-packaged optics (NPO) systems.

The catch: PicoJool’s transition from technical demonstration to commercialization requires significant investment in manufacturing, qualification, and customer support. Establishing sufficient production capacity and integrating its technology into complex AI infrastructure will be critical challenges in a rapidly evolving and competitive optical interconnect market.
