Tutor Intelligence Raises $75M to Rent Robot Workers

Tutor Intelligence raised $75M Series B led by Andreessen Horowitz to scale its robot rental service for factories and logistics.

Josh Gruenstein, CEO of Tutor Intelligence

The big picture: Tutor Intelligence, a startup that rents out robots by the hour or per pick, has raised a $75 million Series B round led by Andreessen Horowitz.

Why it matters:

  • Accessible Automation: Tutor Intelligence’s rental model eliminates upfront capital expenditures, making advanced robotics accessible to a broader range of businesses, particularly in manufacturing and logistics.
  • Data-Driven Intelligence: Each real-world task performed by Tutor’s robots generates valuable training data, continuously improving its foundation models and enabling robots to tackle more complex jobs.
  • Scalable Workforce: The company’s on-demand robot fleet offers a flexible solution to labor shortages, with nearly one-third of customers returning for more robots within the past year.

How it works:

  • Flexible Rental Model: Businesses can hire Tutor’s Sonny and Cassie robots by the hour or per pick, with the company handling deployment, maintenance, and software updates.
  • Continuous Learning Loop: Remote operators, called ‘tutors,’ provide real-time input, turning every completed task into training data for Tutor’s proprietary foundation models.
  • US-Built Fleet: Tutor Intelligence builds and deploys its robots in the US, with plans to have over 1,000 robots under contract by the end of 2027.

The catch: Tutor Intelligence operates in a crowded and competitive physical AI market, with other well-funded players like Eka Robotics, Skild AI, Apptronik, Generalist, RobCo, and Agility Robotics pursuing different strategies such as simulation-first training, universal models, or humanoid hardware. While Andreessen Horowitz has backed both simulation (Eka Robotics) and real-world deployment (Tutor Intelligence), the long-term effectiveness of Tutor’s data-driven, rental-based approach at scale remains to be proven against these diverse and highly capitalized competitors.
