mika Closes €6M to Replace Tax Advisers

mika raised €6M in funding led by Smedvig Ventures to automate tax compliance for small businesses.

Agnieszka Walorska, Founder and Chief Executive of mika.

The big picture: Berlin-based startup mika, which aims to make tax advisers optional for Germany’s small businesses, just closed a €6 million funding round led by Smedvig Ventures.

Why it matters:

  • Germany’s tax complexity: Germany’s €53.8 billion accounting industry highlights the demanding and costly tax environment for nearly a million small incorporated companies (GmbHs and UGs).
  • Autonomous compliance: mika offers a focused, autonomous tax tool for Germany, enabling small businesses to perform one-click compliance, yearly close, and tax declarations.
  • Cost reduction: The platform aims to lower the cost of doing business and bureaucratic burden, making company formation more accessible by removing the need for a traditional tax adviser.

How it works:

  • Three AI systems: mika operates with an AI general ledger, a customer-facing app, and an internal co-pilot tool called mika Desk, working in concert.
  • Hybrid AI approach: The system combines generative AI for interpretation and communication, deterministic models for accurate calculations, and human experts for oversight.
  • Scalable accounting: This hybrid model allows one accountant to efficiently serve approximately 300 clients, significantly increasing capacity and reducing reliance on individual tax advisers.

The catch: The market for AI-driven accounting and tax solutions is growing, with players like Integral (€30M+ funding), Finto (Y Combinator-backed), Candis ($30M+ for AP automation), and Accountable (serving freelancers) addressing different segments or aspects of the problem. While mika’s ‘AI plus human’ model is gaining traction, it faces the challenge of displacing deeply entrenched traditional tax advisory services in a highly regulated market. Convincing small businesses to fully trust an AI-driven platform for critical tax compliance, especially given cybersecurity risks and the slow pace of change in established financial practices, will be key to widespread adoption.
