Lenovo tablet reaches top rung of China’s AI-device grades

A national standard issued in May ranks devices from L1 to L4 and will be applied in China's 2026 trade-in subsidy program.

Lenovo says its Legion Y900 series is the only tablet to reach L3 under China's new national standard for grading AI devices.

The details

  • The standard, GB/Z 177-2026, was issued on May 8 by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Ministry of Commerce. It is a guidance standard, not a mandatory one.
  • It defines four levels, L1 Response to L4 Collaboration. L4 will be specified in a later revision, so L3 is the highest grade in use.
  • L3 requires a device to understand complex requests, break them into tasks, schedule system functions, generate across text and images, and keep long- and short-term memory.
  • Zhang Hua, a Lenovo senior vice president, said model capabilities are converging and what matters is how they combine with on-device computing, hardware and app scheduling.

The catch

The claim that the Y900 is the only L3 tablet comes from Lenovo's own briefing, and the first batch of category standards does not list tablets separately.
