Reverion Lands $175M to Scale Fuel Cell Production

Reverion raised $175M Series B led by Kembara to scale production of its carbon-negative power plants.

Stephan Herrmann, Founder of Reverion

The big picture: Eresing-based Reverion, a climate tech company specializing in reversible solid oxide fuel cell power plants, has raised $175 million in a Series B funding round. The investment was led by Kembara, with participation from new investors Allianz, KfW Capital, Aurum Impact, and Carbon Equity, alongside existing backers Extantia, Energy Impact Partners, UVC Partners, European Innovation Council Fund (EIC Fund), alfa8, and Possible Ventures.

Why it matters:

  • Decentralized Energy: Reverion’s technology offers flexible, decentralized energy generation, crucial for grid stability and energy independence.
  • Carbon Negativity: The power plants can capture biogenic CO₂ when using biogas, enabling carbon-negative operations and contributing to climate goals.
  • Addressing Demand: The funding will help meet the growing demand for reliable, on-site power generation, particularly from energy-intensive data centers facing grid connection delays.

How it works:

  • Dual Functionality: Reverion’s power plants generate electricity from biogas, natural gas, and hydrogen, and can also convert surplus electricity into storable gases through reverse operation.
  • Production Scale-Up: The company plans to establish a new production facility in Germany with an annual manufacturing capacity of 250 megawatts, increasing its current production capacity tenfold.
  • Job Creation: This expansion is expected to create up to 800 additional jobs, significantly boosting the company’s workforce of over 200 employees.

The catch: Scaling complex hardware manufacturing tenfold presents significant operational and supply chain challenges. While Reverion reports a project pipeline exceeding $2 billion, rapid expansion in a competitive climate tech market requires flawless execution to convert potential revenue into sustained growth and market leadership.
