Origin Raises $20M to Scale Construction Robots

Origin raised $20M to scale deployment of its OG-1 robots for autonomous drywall finishing in construction.

Yogesh Ghaturle, CEO of Origin

The big picture: Origin has emerged from stealth with $20 million in funding to expand deployment of its OG-1 robot, which autonomously performs drywall finishing work on construction sites.

Why it matters:

  • Labor Shortages: The construction industry faces persistent labor shortages, with a 2026 survey indicating that worker deficits delayed projects for 42% of responding U.S. construction firms.
  • Untapped Automation: Historically, construction automation focused on heavy exterior work, leaving interior trades—which account for over 65% of project timelines—largely manual.
  • Revenue Loss: Contractors are experiencing significant project backlogs and leaving revenue on the table due to insufficient skilled workers, a demand that is only growing.

How it works:

  • OG-1 Robot: Origin’s flagship OG-1 robot is designed for interior construction, handling tasks such as applying compound, sanding, and priming, and can operate at heights up to 14 feet.
  • Modular Design: The robot features a three-wheeled mobile base, 360-degree sensing, and interchangeable tools, allowing for expansion into additional interior tasks like taping and drywall installation without requiring a new platform.
  • Construction Action Model: OG-1 runs on Origin’s proprietary Construction Action Model, a foundation model built for construction that integrates perception, action, and planning components, trained with simulation and live job site data.

The catch: While Origin claims its robots work at three times human speed with comparable quality, widespread adoption in the diverse and often unpredictable construction environment will depend on seamless integration with existing human workflows, robust performance across varied site conditions, and clear cost-effectiveness for contractors.
