hexafarms Raises €4.8M to Scale Greenhouse AI

hexafarms raised €4.8M Seed funding led by Ananda Impact Ventures and Green Generation Fund to deploy AI sensors and robots for commercial horticulture.

David Ahme, CEO of hexafarms

The big picture: Berlin-based hexafarms has raised €4.8 million in seed funding to help greenhouse growers optimize yields and detect problems earlier using wireless sensors, yield-forecasting software, and scouting robots.

Why it matters:

  • Unrealized Yield: Greenhouse growers often leave up to 30% of their potential yield unrealized due to suboptimal growing conditions, inaccurate harvest forecasts, and late detection of pests and diseases.
  • Data-Driven Decisions: hexafarms provides intelligence that enables growers to act on crop conditions proactively, preventing yield loss and improving overall efficiency in commercial horticulture.
  • Sustainable Food Production: By optimizing production and reducing waste, the technology contributes to more efficient and sustainable food systems, addressing the global need for increased food production with limited land.

How it works:

  • Integrated Data Streams: hexafarms offers an operating system for horticulture that combines wireless sensors recording climate, fertigation, substrate, drainage, and light data with advanced yield-forecasting models.
  • AI-Powered Scouting: Robots scan every plant daily across large areas, using AI models to identify early signs of pests and diseases across approximately 50 cultivars, including tomatoes, peppers, and berries.
  • Subscription Model: Growers pay a subscription fee, shifting costs from capital expenditure to operating expenditure, as hexafarms designs, deploys, and maintains the hardware while retaining ownership.

The catch: The agrifood tech investment landscape has tightened significantly, with funding falling from $51.7 billion in 2021 to $16 billion in 2024. hexafarms’ strategy of owning its hardware, while offering an OpEx model to growers, is capital-intensive. Competitors like Source.ag have raised substantially more for software-only solutions, while others focus on specific robotic tasks. hexafarms must demonstrate its integrated hardware-software model can scale efficiently with its €4.8 million seed round, especially given the costs associated with hardware deployment and maintenance in a competitive market.
