Atlas Bio Raises $12.5M to De-risk Drug Development

Atlas Bio raised $12.5M Seed funding led by Creandum to simulate clinical trials and replace animal testing.

Simon Romanski, CEO and co-founder of Atlas Bio.

The big picture: Swiss tech-bio firm Atlas Bio launched from stealth with $12.5 million in total funding, developing a foundational AI model to run in silico clinical trials. The company aims to simulate patient-level efficacy and safety signals before Phase II, de-risking clinical development and improving trial design.

Why it matters:

  • High failure rate: Phase II clinical trials cost drug companies over $100 million and take two to three years, yet approximately 70% of drugs fail at this stage, often missing potential benefits for other conditions.
  • Inefficient design: Current clinical trials are not designed to identify early benefits across multiple diseases simultaneously, leading to a high failure rate rather than a discovery process.
  • Regulatory shift: Animal models are poor proxies for human biology, and regulators, including the FDA, are moving away from mandatory animal testing requirements.

How it works:

  • RNA-trained model: Atlas Bio’s AI foundation model is trained on roughly 2 million RNA readouts from human tissue, enabling it to simulate how a drug will behave in individual patients within a virtual cohort.
  • Virtual trials: The platform compresses the Phase II timeline to a 12-week simulation project, allowing for counterfactual analysis by testing multiple treatments on the same patient profile at the same disease state.
  • Commercial adoption: Atlas Bio is already collaborating with a top 10 global pharma company, demonstrating the commercial viability of AI-driven simulation as a direct substitute for preclinical animal studies.

The catch: The challenge lies in gaining widespread regulatory acceptance for in silico trials as a direct replacement for traditional methods, especially given the inherent complexity and variability of human biology. While the FDA Modernization Act 2.0 allows for non-animal testing, the burden of proof for AI model validity and generalizability remains high, requiring robust validation and trust-building within a cautious industry.
