Arda Industries Lands $232M to Automate US Manufacturing
Arda Industries raised $232M in Seed and Series A funding led by Altimeter, Accel, and Khosla Ventures to automate manufacturing engineering.

The big picture: Arda Industries, an artificial intelligence startup founded by former OpenAI Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew, has emerged from stealth with $232 million in total funding to develop software that automates manufacturing engineering and accelerates the production of complex hardware in the United States.
The funding includes a $160 million Series A round co-led by Altimeter, Accel, and Khosla Ventures, valuing the company at $1.5 billion. This follows a $72 million seed round led by Accel and Founders Fund.
Why it matters:
- Production bottlenecks: Manufacturing complex hardware, such as drones, smartphones, and data center equipment, requires extensive manual effort to translate new product designs into production plans, causing significant delays.
- Engineer shortages: Arda’s platform aims to address shortages of experienced manufacturing engineers by automating repetitive planning and documentation tasks, enabling existing teams to support more production activity.
- Domestic competitiveness: The company seeks to make domestic manufacturing more competitive for rapidly changing products by reducing the engineering effort and time required to establish and modify production lines.
How it works:
- AI-driven planning: Arda uses AI agents to analyze computer-aided design (CAD) files and other engineering materials, automatically generating assembly plans and work instructions that adapt quickly to design changes.
- Accelerated workflows: The system significantly reduces the time for manufacturing engineering tasks; basic work instructions can be generated in 15 minutes (down from approximately 10 hours), and complex workflows in roughly 2.5 hours (from up to 30 hours).
- Robotic automation: Arda is developing AI agents capable of translating assembly plans into instructions for industrial robots, with the goal of reducing the time needed to update robotic assembly systems from months to days.
The catch: While Arda’s technology promises significant efficiency gains, the adoption of new AI-driven manufacturing processes can face resistance due to established workflows, the capital expenditure required for integration, and the need for workforce retraining. The company’s long-term ambition to support large-scale consumer electronics production in the United States also faces challenges from deeply entrenched global supply chains and existing cost structures.
