Mara Raises $7M to Expand Counter-Drone System

The big picture: Mara, a US-based defense tech startup, secured $7 million in a pre-seed round led by Khosla Ventures to advance Spike, its autonomous counter-drone system. The company aims to transition Spike from field trials to real-world deployment, with ground-mounted units expected by late 2026.

• Two-Part System: It consists of Spotter, a fixed sensor unit with electro-optical, acoustic, and optional radar detection, and Seeker, a 250-gram, 200 km/h tube-launched interceptor with on-board targeting intelligence.
• Autonomous Engagement: While human operators define rules of engagement, Spotter can automatically trigger Seeker launches, providing scalable protection for perimeters, convoys, or individual squads.

The catch: The counter-UAS market is rapidly growing and highly competitive, with established players like DroneShield, Fortem Technologies, and Anduril offering integrated, albeit more expensive, solutions. Mara’s cost-competitive approach is unproven in terms of revenue, as the company is still in field trials and has not yet secured commercial contracts. Its ambitious long-term vision for mass-produced small robots extends significantly beyond its current funding and operational scope.
