Oshen Raises $5M to Scale Ocean Robot Production

The big picture: Plymouth-based startup Oshen has secured $5 million in financing to ramp up manufacturing of its C-Star ocean robots, which were the first uncrewed vehicles to collect real-time data from within a Category 5 hurricane.

Why it matters:

  • Unmonitored Oceans: Despite covering 70% of the planet, real-time ocean monitoring is severely limited, relying on a small number of costly ships, buoys, and satellites that cannot provide continuous, widespread observation.
  • Growing Market: The unmanned surface vehicle market is projected to nearly double from $0.82 billion in 2025 to $1.59 billion by 2030, with defense spending identified as the fastest-growing segment.
  • Extreme Resilience: Oshen’s C-Star robots have demonstrated exceptional durability, operating autonomously for months and successfully gathering data in the most severe conditions on Earth, including Category 5 hurricanes.

How it works:

  • Autonomous & Deployable: Oshen’s 1.2-meter C-Stars are powered by wind and solar energy, designed to be light enough for a single person to launch from a boat, and can operate independently for months, transmitting data via satellite.
  • Distributed Sensing Networks: The robots function in groups, enabling them to cover hundreds of miles of ocean, either spreading out for broad coverage or converging at specific points for detailed monitoring.
  • Rapid Production Scale: The company has significantly increased its manufacturing capacity, now producing 15 robots every six weeks, a substantial leap from the 15 units produced in its initial three years, with an additional 100 units already on order.

The catch: Oshen faces competition from well-funded rivals like Saildrone and Sofar Ocean, as well as established players such as Boeing’s Liquid Robotics, which have secured major government and defense contracts. While Oshen aims to win similar contracts by offering affordable, high-volume robots, its ability to disrupt naval procurement, which historically favors a few costly, specialized platforms, remains unproven despite its hurricane data and production record.
